The Region’s Leading Behavioral Health Hospital.
As Northeastern Pennsylvania’s only free-standing private psychiatric hospital, First Hospital Wyoming Valley is the region’s leading provider of inpatient psychiatric treatment for children, adolescents and adults. Conveniently located in Kingston, First Hospital is at the core of an integrated mental health delivery system that includes CHOICES, Advanced Psychological and Counseling Services and Community Counseling Services of Northeast PA.
The 107-bed facility provides an ideal environment conducive to psychiatric treatment and healing. It combines personal attention, a team of talented and broadly experienced professionals and compassionate and respectful care to provide comprehensive treatment.
Inpatient Children and Adolescents Services
In some cases, children need special care and support. For that reason, First Hospital Wyoming Valley houses a 13-bed Children’s Unit that provides the unique services and programs to provide for the emotional and psychological needs of children ages 4 through 13.
Under the guidance of highly trained and skilled experts, the therapeutic focus of the unit centers on a rapid assessment of each child’s situation – the goal of which is to help the child deal with specific difficulties and to hasten a return to active life outside the hospital setting.
Similarly, the 18-bed Adolescent Unit offers expert assessment and treatment of patients between the ages of 14 and 18. A specialized team of experienced professionals helps adolescents benefit from the latest advances in behavioral medicine.
The wide range of services available on the Adolescent Unit, include:
- A Substance Abuse Track, addressing the complex needs of adolescents experiencing both psychiatric and substance abuse problems.
- A Survivor Track, providing specialized group and individual therapy for the adolescent who survived sexual abuse.
- Group therapies that focus on self-expression, problem-solving, changing behavior and improving relationships.
- Social, emotional and psychiatric evaluation.
Patients in our Children’s and Adolescents Units attend Genesis School, a private academic school licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Inpatient Psychiatric Services for Adults
At First Hospital Wyoming Valley, highly skilled and talented behavioral health professionals provide the very best in emotional and psychiatric care.
To ensure that patients get the most from their stay, patients are placed in the specialized program that best suits their needs. Our professionals first establish the best course of treatment based on the patient’s severity of symptoms and ability to participate in treatment. Then a defined program of treatment is used to help the client reach his or her full potential.
Here’s a closer look at the programs:
Adult I Program
The 20-bed Adult I program specializes in treatment for adult and elderly patients with episodic psychiatric issues. Patients benefit from individual, group and family therapies focused on stabilizing the patient’s symptoms while working toward specific behavioral goals.
Adult II Program
The 20-bed Adult II program is specially designed for patients with concomitant substance abuse and psychiatric issues. The 12-Step Recovery Model is combined with intensive therapeutic interventions that help patients work toward recovery from drug and alcohol addiction while receiving needed psychiatric treatment.
Adult III Program
The 18-bed Adult III program meets the needs of individuals with chronic mental health problems. The staff has been specifically trained to compassionately care for patients who may benefit from increased direction and assistance with daily living activities.
Short-Term Assessment and Treatment (STAT) Program
The 18-bed Short-Term Assessment and Treatment Program is unique to Northeastern Pennsylvania. Combining the benefits of rapid stabilization with an intensive and interactive treatment approach, the program is designed for highly motivated patients who can fully participate in a wide range of therapeutic experiences. Lengths of stay are very brief, ranging from just a few days to no more than a week. Patients who can benefit from this program include those who have never been hospitalized and who would be comfortable in a stimulating and challenging environment.
